of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you

're coming from newtown, connecticut, a town that for a week now has felt much longer than seven days has been heavy under grief and also full of love and full of resolve to remember the lives cut far too short. we wanted to come back to newtown tonight not to argue or point fingers but to honor and to remember the 12 little girls, the eight little boys, six dedicated women who died at sandy hook elementary school one week ago today. today here in newtown at 9:30 in the morning bells rang out for each of those lives lost, the mothers and the daughters, the sons and the nieces and the nephews and the brothers and the sisters and the friends. we will remember them. in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are not wired right for some reason. >> since we passed the brady law, the assaults are down. we need to keep working on this, and there are lots of different solutions. >> just because the republicans may not be runn
